A Welcome Myth That Eating Fat is Bad for You!

fat_wIf you are trying to lose weight, you have probably been told to cut the fats out of your diet. This advice could be the reason why you are struggling to lose those pounds!

There are so many myths surrounding the diet world that it is often hard to distinguish fact from fiction.
The fact is we all need certain fats in our diet. Not least our food would taste awful without them! Fatty acids supply vitamins and minerals that our bodies cannot make yet need for optimum health. Instead of cutting them out completely, you should be advised to cut saturated ones out of your diet for good. These are the least healthy and serve no function apart from to make us fatter.

If you eat a lot of saturated fats, you significantly increase your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer. So you need to think twice before eating certain cheese, lard, butter and fatty meat particularly processed foods such as bacon and sausages.

The essential fatty acids we need come from polyunsaturated fats. These help us to process energy produced by proteins and carbohydrates. You will have heard that you should be increasing the quantity of Omega 3 and Omega 6 in your diet. The former is found in oily fish, flaxseed and pumpkin seeds. The later is found in hemp, sunflower, sesame and corn oil. Omega 3 will help to reduce your blood pressure whilst omega 6 will help to stabilise blood sugar levels.

Trans fats are also known as hydrogenated. They are added to shop bought produce to improve the taste and to prolong the shelf life. They are linked to cancer and heart disease and should be very high up on your list of foods to avoid.

So now you know the differences, you are less likely to be eating the wrong ones. But don’t be tempted to cut out this food group altogether. The first organ to lose fatty cells is your brain. This will adversely affect your mood and may even cause depression. It may also explain why certain celebrities always look miserable!

You can reduce the amount of fatty acids in your diet by baking, steaming or grilling rather than frying. Dump the deep fryer and your waist will thank you for it. Buy leaner cuts of meat and chop off the visible fat. Current guidelines are that fats should make up no more than 30% of your total calorie intake. Obviously this should be coming from the good fats and not from those found in cakes and sweets!
