In the Telegraph today there is an article that tells us drinking a bottle of wine a day can cut heart disease!
Surely we’ve heard this before, haven’t we? Well maybe not quite the quantity! It seems it is only a claim that covers the men. Shame!
Looking into the study a little more closely it seems that those producing the research come from Spain who just happen to be one of the largest producers of wine in the world. That said they also have some of the lowest mortality rates from heart related diseases. An interesting fact in itself is it not?
The article is somewhat ambiguously written but seems to say that men drinking up to 11 units or more i.e. a bottle of wine, had a 50% reduced rate of getting some form of heart disease. The claims don’t apply to women because the data couldn’t show one way or the other if the same was true for them.
Concerns were raised that interpretation could be taken to mean that there are no health risks to drinking large quantities of alcohol regularly. Of course it will be taken that way, it’s just human nature! We don’t want to be told that we can’t get plastered when we have a will do we?
As far as I can see Department Of Health seemed to suggest that this is one of many studies and should not be taken into account on its own. So enough where’s the corkscrew?
