I’ve had a digital camera now for several years which my sons bought for me one Christmas. My eldest son, always technical in nature, probably did quite a lot of investigative work at the time in order to make an appropriate choice. Because the camera was bought for me, I have been relatively unaware of what the important component parts are and what they do. My research now of the Canon Powershot sd1200is has been very helpful in educating me about some of the various parts of a digital camera.
How Many Megapixels?
Well the Canon Powershot is a 10 megapixel digital camera which mean that this resolution captures enough detail for prints up to a size of 13 x 19 inches.
A megapixel is a unit of measurement that represents one million pixels, those tiny dots of color that make up an image. Megapixels represent the resolution, or size and quality of an image, or an image-capturing device such as the Canon Power Shot. The higher the number of megapixels a camera can capture, and 10 megapixels is quite high, the higher the quality of the images it produces will be.
Other Features of the Canon Powershot sd1200is and What They Do
The 3x optical zoom uses the lens of the camera to magnify the size of an image and bring the subject closer. Unlike digital zoom where a chip is used to magnify the image, optical zoom enlarges the subject without sacrificing resolution and quality. Digital cameras such as this Canon Power Shot with optical zoom have a definite advantage over other cameras with only digital zoom.
The Canon Power Shot has a large PureColor 2.5-inch LCD II screen for excellent control when framing your shots. The PureColor LCD II offers great color, resolution and contrast even when viewed at an angle. The screen is scratch-resistant so is hard wearing and has an anti-reflective coating which makes it easy to see in any light. It has Night Display for easy viewing in dim light so several people can gather round and see your pictures.
The DIGIC 4 Image Processor allows for faster operation while increasing the clarity and color reproduction of images. Other features provided with the DIGIC 4 imaging processor are Face Detection, Face Detection self-timer and Intelligent Contrast Correction (i-contrast).
When turned on ‘face detection’ identifies the main face in the picture and subsidiary faces and calculates the optimum focus and exposure so that each face is shown as best as possible.
The “face detection self-timer” mode on the Canon Powershot, means that if you place the camera on a tripod and set up “face detection self-timer” the camera will wait for you to step into the picture, and then wait 2 more seconds before shooting. So you can be in the picture too! So often the photographer is missing from the photo.
With ‘Smart AUTO’ the canon powershot camera is able to automatically adjust to the scene or object and to the shooting conditions. The camera then automatically selects an appropriate setting from 18 specially defined settings. In addition the camera automatically detects and corrects camera shake, one of the main reasons for blurred, out of focus shots. So you can be confident that whatever you are photographing, a beautiful flower, a glorious sunset or your family at the beach, you are getting wonderful and memorable images.
i-Contrast can be used to brighten dark areas of a picture whilst leaving the bright areas unchanged. This creates better and more detailed images where the main subject is dark, and produces less but a more natural contrast. i-Contrast can even be used on the Canon Power Shot to adjust images that have already been shot and that are stored on the camera.
No More Red Eyed Monsters!
The Canon Powershot sd1200 can correct red eye in three ways:
• Detect and correct red eye as the photo is taken.
• Automatically detect and correct red eye during image playback
• As you playback images on the LCD screen you can manually find any red eyes in a scene and instruct the camera to remove them.
